Hannah-Kathryn Valles is an American photographer based in Rome, Italy.

She believes the human experience, in all its fraught and beautiful realities, can be understood by examining three relationships: our relationship with ourselves, each other, and the world around us. She aims to create photographs that explore and capture these connections, in the hope that, through sustained and nuanced storytelling, we can better understand our shared humanity and ultimately imagine a better future.

She received the Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Award in 2024 for her photographic project Between Two Stitches, which looks at the vital role of tailoring co-ops as supportive spaces for West African migrants in Paris. This work was exhibited with Dysturb in New York City and Paris, France.

In 2023, Hannah-Kathryn interned with the National Geographic Society and in 2024, she completed a 6-week fellowship with the Associated Press in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During this time, she covered a wide range of stories, including the Rock in Rio music festival and the historic rise in transgender representation among candidates running in Brazil’s municipal elections.

Her current projects examine the grip of religious nationalism on politics and explore expansive approaches to community in fractured social landscapes. Her other interests include environmental degradation, human displacement, and the connection between gender and rising authoritarianism around the world.

Hannah-Kathryn earned a bachelor's degree in International Relations and Anthropology from the University of Arkansas and a master's in Journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. When not behind the camera, she loves to swim, spend time with her cat, and experiment with unusual gelato flavor combinations.
